La Redonda

Introduction

In this shallow area close to the coast, at the foot of the silver lighthouse, there is the cargo of a wooden ship from the XVII or XVIII century that transported iron strips. It corresponds to the industrial activity of the forges of Guipuzcoa.

The dive is so called because of the presence in the area of a rock that emerges from the water at low tides and is hidden or almost hidden when the tide rises: “the low round”.

Immersion

This shallows has the typical East-West orientation of most of the dives in Ulia. We anchor the boat at 10-12m. depth.

If we sail a few meters from the anchorage slab on its north side and a little to the east, with the right arm against the wall, we will find a small cave. In the upper part of the cave we can find the remains of the iron straps from the cargo of the ship mentioned above, and inside we can see a lot of untreated iron ore. The cave has several entrances, one of them is located on the north side of the cave, on a flat rock that makes a fall, and there is another one on the east side. The exit we normally use is the one to the south of the cave, which simulates a kind of vertical chimney. The cave is large enough inside to accommodate 3 or 4 people at a time.

From this point, the most common dive would be to head north, jumping a slab, reaching a channel at about 15-20 m. deep. We would take an easterly direction to the round rock, which we will turn around to start our return.

We will return westward along the slab on the south side of the round, in less water, until we reach the anchorage. On our way back and near the round, we will be able to see a broken anchor.

In this dive we can also find a multitude of canyons. One of them can be easily seen near the cave a little to the south. It is a canyon that is standing on the slab. In the southern part of the anchorage slab we have also found a multitude of canyons in shallow water (about 8-10m. deep).

Marine Life

Although the interest of this dive lies more in the formations, remains of ferrous cargo, and canyons that we will find scattered around the area, we will not lack life at the bottom.

La redonda is a typically rocky dive, with many nooks and crannies to look for. Above all, conger eels and spider crabs abound, as well as octopus and cuttlefish, galateas and santiaguiños, tremblers, ….. There is no lack of the beautiful macro life of our area (nudibranchs, planaria,…).
